Microsoft warns of UAC prompts and MSI install failures in Windows security updates
Initial DisclosureMicrosoft says the August 2025 Windows security update (KB5063878) and later updates enforce User Account Control (UAC) administrator prompts for Windows Installer (MSI) repair and related operations to mitigate CVE-2025-50173, but the change is causing unexpected UAC prompts and app installation failures for non-admin users across supported Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows Server versions. The company says a future Windows update will let specific apps perform MSI repair without prompts, and until then recommends running impacted apps as administrator or using Known Issue Rollback (KIR) through Group Policy; Office Professional Plus 2010 can fail with Error 1730 during configuration, and standard-user deployments through Configuration Manager (ConfigMgr) and Autodesk app launches can also be affected.
