Signal introduces opt-in encrypted chat backups

    Untyped Phase

Signal introduced an opt-in feature for end-to-end encrypted backups of chats, allowing users to restore messages after a phone is damaged or lost. The feature is available in the latest Signal beta version for Android and will roll out to iOS and desktop devices after testing. Users who enable secure backups from Signal Settings get daily backups, excluding messages scheduled to disappear within the next 24 hours and view-once messages, with a device-generated 64-character recovery key required to decrypt restores. Signal also offers 100 MiB of free message storage, keeps 45 days of media history in the free tier, and charges US$1.99 per month for up to 100 GB.
