A Windows 11 24H2 service disruption is causing File Explorer, the Start Menu, and other shell components to crash after cumulative updates since July 2025. The issue matters because affected systems can lose core navigation and settings functionality, especially in non-persistent VDI environments. Microsoft says the breakage stems from XAML dependency packages that fail to register in time. A PowerShell workaround is available while Microsoft works on a permanent fix.

Microsoft confirms Windows 11 24H2 shell crash bug

    Initial Disclosure

Microsoft confirmed a critical Windows 11 24H2 issue affecting systems that installed cumulative updates released since July 2025, where XAML dependency packages MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS, Microsoft.UI.Xaml.CBS, and MicrosoftWindows.Client.Core fail to register in time after update installation, causing Explorer.exe, StartMenuExperienceHost, ShellHost.exe, the Start menu, the taskbar, and the Settings app to crash or fail to launch, with especially disruptive effects in non-persistent VDI environments. Microsoft says it is working on a permanent fix and has provided PowerShell Add-AppxPackage commands and a logon script workaround to re-register the missing packages before Explorer launches.
