The FCC banned foreign-made drones and critical components, adding them to its Covered List to reduce national-security risks in the U.S. market. The move is meant to keep DJI and Autel Robotics systems out of U.S. commerce and limit exposure to unauthorized surveillance and data exfiltration. It follows a White House interagency review under the 2025 NDAA that found the systems pose unacceptable risks. The restriction also lands as the U.S. prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics.

FCC bans foreign-made drones and critical components
Legal Policy Action UpdateFCC bans foreign-made drones and UAS critical components after a White House interagency review concluded that foreign-produced systems pose unacceptable national-security risks. The Covered List update targets uncrewed aircraft systems, communications and video surveillance equipment and services, and component parts such as data transmission devices, flight controllers, ground control stations, navigation systems, batteries, smart batteries, and motors, with DHS able to exempt specific models. The restriction is intended to reduce unauthorized surveillance, data exfiltration, and direct UAS attacks while leaving previously purchased consumer drones usable.
