Microsoft is adding smartphone-style app permission prompts and Baseline Security Mode to Windows 11, tightening consent and runtime integrity controls for apps that access sensitive resources. The update matters because it gives users and administrators more control over files, cameras, microphones, and which signed apps, services, and drivers can run by default.

Microsoft announces Windows 11 app consent prompts and baseline security mode
Initial DisclosureMicrosoft announced Windows Baseline Security Mode and User Transparency and Consent for Windows 11, adding smartphone-style prompts so users can grant, deny, and revoke access to files, cameras, microphones, and other protected resources. The update also enables runtime integrity safeguards by default so only properly signed apps, services, and drivers can run, while still allowing users and IT administrators to override the safeguards for specific apps when needed. Microsoft said the phased rollout is intended to respond to applications overriding settings, installing unwanted software, or modifying core Windows experiences without user consent.
