Legal Policy Action UpdateU.S. authorities said Russian national Ilya Angelov, who used the aliases "milan" and "okart", was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting he co-managed the Mario Kart/TA551 spam botnet. Prosecutors linked the botnet to massive phishing activity between 2017 and 2021, including email campaigns that could send 700,000 emails a day and infect about 3,000 computers per day at peak, and said it was used to deliver BitPaymer ransomware against 72 U.S. companies between August 2018 and December 2019, generating more than $14 million in extortion payments.
