UK construction sector warned on invoice fraud

    Industry Or Public Sector Update

The UK National Crime Agency and the National Federation of Builders warned the construction sector about rising invoice fraud and business email compromise (BEC) that targets accounts payable and finance personnel, with fraudsters impersonating suppliers, spoofing sender domains, or hijacking email accounts to change bank details on fake invoices and pressure quick payments. The NCA cited Report Fraud figures showing almost £4m ($5.3m) lost in September 2025 across 83 cases, and separate analysis said construction and manufacturing accounted for a quarter of invoice fraud in 2024/25, more than any other sectors. The warning urged supplier callback checks, colleague verification for high-value payments, and securing IT systems with password management, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and up-to-date anti-malware.
