A multi-state QR-code phishing campaign is sending fake traffic violation texts that impersonate state courts and push victims into a CAPTCHA-gated payment flow. The operation began a few weeks ago and has been seen in New York, California, North Carolina, Illinois, Virginia, Texas, Connecticut, and New Jersey. Victims are redirected to counterfeit DMV-style pages that demand $6.99 and collect personal and financial data. The activity creates immediate risk of financial fraud, identity theft, and follow-on phishing.

Fake court notice texts push QR-code phishing
Initial DisclosureA QR-code phishing campaign targets U.S. recipients with fake "Notice of Default" traffic-violation texts that impersonate state courts, including messages claiming to be from the Criminal Court of the City of New York and directing people to scan an embedded QR code for an alleged unpaid $6.99 balance; the flow sends victims through a CAPTCHA-gated intermediary page to counterfeit DMV-style sites such as ny.gov-skd[.]org and ny.ofkhv[.]life to collect personal and credit-card information.
