Microsoft is adding Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery to Windows Update, giving it a remote rollback control for problematic Windows drivers. The capability reduces how long devices can remain on a bad driver after distribution and cuts manual remediation work for hardware partners and end users. Testing runs between May and August, and rollbacks for drivers rejected during Flighting or Gradual Rollout begin in September 2026.

Microsoft announces Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery for Windows Update
Initial DisclosureMicrosoft introduced Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery for Windows Update, a managed rollback capability that can remotely restore problematic Windows drivers to a previously known-good version or the next best version available without requiring hardware partners or end users to manually uninstall the driver. The recovery is handled through the existing Windows Update infrastructure and the Hardware Dev Center (HDC) Driver Shiproom, with no new client agent or partner tooling required, and devices without a Driver Shiproom-approved driver will not attempt recovery. Microsoft also said the feature is being tested between May and August 2026 and will begin rolling back drivers rejected during Flighting or Gradual Rollout in September 2026, alongside a Driver Quality Initiative unveiled at WinHEC 2026 in Taipei to improve driver quality, reliability, security, performance, compatibility and quality across the Windows ecosystem.
