Origin Energy confirms customer data breach exposing PII
Victim Impact UpdateOrigin Energy confirmed an unknown threat actor accessed some customer data and exposed full name, physical address, date of birth, phone number, account information, and incomplete credit-card and bank-account digits; the company said the partial financial details cannot be used to hijack accounts or make unauthorized charges, notified the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the Australian Cyber Security Centre, and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, and said confirmed impacted clients are being contacted directly. Before the second statement, a threat actor identifying as John Doe told 7news they held data for 2 million Origin customers and would leak it in two weeks unless contacted via Signal.
