Europol and the US GAO released reports urging faster post-quantum cryptography (PQC) preparation as CRQCs could eventually break widely used encryption. The guidance pushes organizations and federal agencies to inventory vulnerable cryptography, plan funding, and test PQC migration. The reports also elevate near-term defensive steps, including tighter protocol choices and reducing long-term exposure of sensitive data.

US GAO publishes PQC readiness report with 89 recommendations
Industry Or Public Sector UpdateOn October 6, the US GAO published a redacted report saying it had already made 89 recommendations to 23 agencies to develop inventories of vulnerable cryptography, identify funding needs for post-quantum cryptography, and test PQC. The report warned that until the selected agencies close those gaps, they will not be well-positioned to address the threat from cryptographically relevant quantum computers.

Europol warns organizations about HNDL exposure and quantum risk
Industry Or Public Sector UpdateOn October 7, Europol published two quantum reports warning that encrypted communications and stored files could become vulnerable to harvest now decrypt later (HNDL) attacks, with exposure depending on protocols, configurations and key management practices. Europol urged organizations to upgrade to TLS 1.3 and SSH2, disable legacy protocols, enforce forward secrecy, delete unnecessary sensitive data, and prepare for PQC adoption, while also warning cryptocurrency stakeholders and wallet providers to test and deploy PQC-enabled wallets.
