The UK National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) has begun testing Proactive Notifications, a new government cybersecurity service that will contact organizations about vulnerabilities and recommended updates. The pilot matters because it uses publicly available information and internet scanning to flag exposed security issues before a direct compromise is detected. It will cover UK domains and IP addresses from local ASNs, but the NCSC says it will not cover every system or vulnerability.

NCSC starts testing Proactive Notifications
Initial DisclosureThe UK National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) announced the testing phase of Proactive Notifications, a service delivered through Netcraft that uses publicly available information and internet scanning to inform organizations about exposed vulnerabilities and related issues. The pilot can include recommendations for specific CVEs or broader security problems such as weak encryption, covers UK domains and IP addresses from UK Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs), and sends emails from netcraft.com addresses without attachments or requests for payments or personal information. The NCSC also said the service will not cover every system or vulnerability and gave no timeline for broader availability.
